The Dahathum Secondary School computer centres was one of two installed in the Syangja District in 2017, bringing the total number of centres in this District to four. This school was recommended to us by our partner the Nepal Rural Information Technology Development Society.
60% of the children are from traditionally marginalised/indigenous castes and most of the children can’t afford much in the way of stationery and school uniforms. They have five computers but these are not working properly. They don’t have internet but they are looking at Wimax or Lumbini Net as an option for the school.
There are 32 teachers, including one computer teacher for the English medium and one computer teacher for the Nepali medium.
In this project, we installed ten Lenovo laptops with external keyboards and mice and a UPS battery backup power supply system. We also provided comprehensive one day digital literacy training program for the teachers.
The computers enabled the school to teacher computer science which, at the time, the Ministry of Education was making the subject compulsory for grades 6, 7 and 8, throughout the country.
